The Seymour Wrestling Program has its roots in the early sixties,
beginning in 1960. As a young team, the record keeping was not the best,
and competing teams were few and far between. Then the team began to
gain some experience where team points increased to almost 1,000 per
season, from the previous 476 in 1961. 1996-97 season was the best so
far, at the peak of Seymour Wrestling team points were 1720 in the
season. The nineties and 00's were very productive for the team, as the
was able to also produce its largest winning margin of 84.
Thus far, no state champions have been Seymour alum, but we are
always looking for new people! The highest rank ever achieved by Seymour
Wrestling is a third place finisher.
As of 1996, the team was entered in its current Conference, Hoosier
Hills Conference. Before this point, the team was not as successful in
this new conference but a challenge is always a good thing.
Although not as many teams points were scored in the 70's, the team
was able to come in first in sectionals three years running and then
several second and third places. The 80's also had several good years
and had a first place finish in sectionals.
In 2008, a traveling trophy was started between Seymour and
Scottsburg, a major rival for the Owls. "The Big brASS Shoe" has not yet
been won back, but very close margins of loss have kept the Owls away
from having the trophy.
